Obituary for Betty P. Martin (Kiefer)

Betty P. Martin (Kiefer)
Betty Kiefer Martin died on Feb. 5, 2017. Betty was born in New York on Nov. 15, 1925 and was raised by her maternal grandparents, Frederick and Elizabeth Tellgmann of Seymour. She attended Seymour schools, graduating valedictorian, class of 1943, from High School. She married her husband, Calvin Frank Martin, when he returned from his tour in the United States Navy, following World War II. They were married on April 3, 1946 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Seymour. She found pleasure in serving her Lord, at that church, in many capacities, as a church school teacher, parish visitor, vestry member, news letter editor and a member of the altar guild and Episcopal Church Women’s group. For several years she served as a den mother with a Beacon Falls Scout troop. She and Cal enjoyed traveling, especially to Maine. For several years they owned a Cessna plane and flew to Montauk, Long Island, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and Block Island. They visited many islands in the Caribbean, England, Scotland, Wales, Israel and Egypt. Betty was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She had many pen pals to whom she wrote faithfully. A nature lover, she studied and journaled wild flowers wherever she went. In addition to her husband she is survived by her son Scott and his wife Kathleen Zaniewski Martin, grandsons Daniel and Douglas Zaniewski and her daughter Robin and her husband Edward Tucker. A celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Society of St. Margaret’s Convent, PO Box C, Duxbury, MA 02331-0605 for relief funds in Haiti.
