Obituary for James F. Rooney Sr.

BETHANY, CT: James F. Rooney, Sr., age 93 a longtime sixty years resident of Bethany, he entered into peaceful rest on March 7, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret (Crowsley) Rooney. Mr. Rooney was born September 28, 1929 in Braintree, MA and grew up in New Bedford. He was the son of the late Lawrence and Ellen Rooney.

James served in the U.S. Army during the Occupation of Japan following WW II, and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the post-war era. He was a retired Tool Room Supervisor with Olin Metals Research in New Haven. James enjoyed a keen interest in Botany, gardening and being in nature, and spending time with the family dog, Lily. James will be fondly remembered as a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Mr. Rooney leaves his loving family including his sons, James Rooney Jr. of Shelton, and Gary Rooney of Bethany; his daughters, Susan Callaghan and her husband Dennis of Ansonia, and Gail Appel of Bethany; his brothers, Larry Rooney of Maryland, John Rooney and his wife Judy of Wallingford, and Dan Rooney and his wife Ellen of Naugatuck; his sisters, Patricia Bates and her husband Curt of Sacramento, CA, and Joan Vermilya of Wallingford; grandchildren, Walter Rich, Mark Rich, Elyse Callaghan, Brenton Callaghan, Kris Appel, Evan Appel, Kim Appel, and Sarah Hershman; also great grandchildren,Pauletta Rich, Emily Rich, Harper Hershman, Isabel Hershman, Josie Hershman, and Gavin Herdman, and several nieces and nephews.

A Private Memorial Service in celebration of James’ life will be held with Full Military Honors. The Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home, 161 West Church Street, Seymour is entrusted with the arrangements. Internment will be private. There are no calling hours. Please share a memory at www.hullfh.com
