EULOGY BY CHRISTOPHER KILEY

Tribute to my Mother Patricia Kiley
On behalf of my brother and Tim and our family we first would like to thank everyone in attendance as well as those who could not be with us for all your love and support, your phone calls, messages and different ways you have reached out to us. We love you and are grateful that you are in our lives.
How do you sum up your Mothers’ life and all she has done for me and for our family in a matter of 15 minutes? If I had to summarize I would say Mom was all about Love. She loved and cared for everyone around her and they loved and cared for her the same way. Especially family, it was her pride and joy.
Was she perfect? Heck no, none of us are. But I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to be my Mom even if I had a choice. She was God’s perfect choice, his gift to me, my brother Tim and my sister Patti. I guess I should thank my Dad for his good taste in women as well and to my Mom that she said YES to his Wedding proposal in 1952!
My mother was the 10th child of 11 children to my grandparents Edmund and Alma LaBranche. She was born Monday, June 11th 1934. Raised in Shelton CT and married my Dad on September 13th 1952. They were married for 45 yrs and had three children in Tim, Patty and Chris, 9 Grandchildren- Christopher, Jonathon, Shannon, Kevin, Daniel, Ryan, Colleen, Meghan and Cara. Mom also had 5 great grandchildren- Aaron, Aiden, Abigail, Raelyn and Penny who always brightened her day when they were around her. She leaves quite a legacy through us all.
The year Mom was born FDR Was President, Some 1st were established that year as well- The 1st Mother-in-Law’s day was celebrated! The first Masters Golf Tournament was played. Babe Ruth retired but was replaced with a guy named Dimaggio.
Truth be told I was trying to make this interesting with fun facts to WOW you, but the fact of the matter is a lot of bad stuff happened in 34’- guys like Hitler, Stalin and Mossolini were terrorizing the world, Gangsters John Dillinger Baby-Face Nelson & Bonnie and Clyde were killed that year.
Amongst all of that bad stuff back in Shelton Connecticut an Angel was born named Patricia June LaBranche! And because of that miracle birth many of us including myself are here today. My mother loved her family. Mom was our biggest fan, whether it was attending Tim or my ballgames, which were many or she would be with my sister Patti, either dancing at Mary A. Kiley school of Dance or Cheerleading from Pop Warner through High School. She and Dad always supported our endeavors and were actively involved in our lives. Mom poured her life into ours.
Our morals, our values and our love for God and serving others all came from Mom, and from Dad. Teaching us “It is better to give than to receive” It’s one thing to hear a teaching like this and it’s quite another thing to have a parent model that for you in front of you her whole life. Thank you Mom living what you preached it was far more effective than any words could have taught us.
Mom spent a lot of time with her sisters particularly as we were growing up. I remember Mom packing the old Ford Station Wagon and off we would go up to Bristol to Aunt Leona’s practically every Sunday, many holidays and memories were made there or up to the Housatonic River to Aunt Teresa’s or Aunt Margaret’s to swim in Shelton. With 10 siblings we were never lacking of places to go or people to see. I fondly remember the family summer picnics with all my cousins, Aunts and Uncles. The horseshoe games, the swimming and Whiffle ball games against The Uncles! My cousins and I always thought this is the year we are finally going to beat those old guys! Never happened…but we had many fun times trying…
My Mother was at the time a “Stay at Home Mom” but the ironic thing was we never stayed home! If she wasn’t going somewhere with her sisters and brothers it was usually with her Three Amigo’s- Elinor McCarthy, Winnie Kiley or Alice Cote. I am sure you all have many similar memories of my mother and the times we shared together.

After my Dad passed 22 years ago in 1996 I saw tremendous strength in my mother. I saw her grow in her faith. They say in crisis you either grow bitter or grow better. Mom chose to lean into God as opposed to becoming bitter about losing her husband so young. (getting younger every passing year!) It was not uncommon to find Mom praying with a sibling or friend when they were hospitalized or sick or going through a tough time. God was very present in Mom’s life and in her own way she would find practical ways to serve God and those around her. She loved helping out at “My Sisters Place” and for many years played Mrs. Claus at Christmas time for the kids to have their picture with her Husband- Santa himself!
For a number of years after Dad passed Mom had sleepovers on Christmas between our house, Tim’s and Patti’s so she wasn’t alone Christmas morning. We built many fond memories during those years. One year Mom was at my home and the kids woke her up to exchange presents. Those who know my mother know that she’s pretty gullible. My kids and I decided to play a trick on Nanna by buying her a “Fake Lotto Ticket.” She proceeds to scratch off the ticket getting more and more excited as she inched closer to claiming her prize. She completes the ticket & is sooooo excited clapping and jumping up and down as she thought she won Three Million Dollars. That is until read the back only to find out she had to collect the 3 million from the Easter Bunny! The expression on her face was priceless- a memory I will never forget.
Another thing about my mother was she never attended a parade she didn’t like! She would have our clothes all color coordinated in our red, white and blue- and couldn’t wait until the CT Hurricanes came by…The Parade and her family was the center of the holidays for her.
My mother also had a creative knack in her for Flower arranging and as a Hairdresser. I know many of us here had our hair cut for years by Mom until she had to retire. Hairdressing school with Elinor McCarthy and Gloria Hall was another place lifelong friends were made. Mom practiced cosmetology for over 25 yrs. My brother actually retired Mom and took her scissors from her when she was in her late 70’s!
After about three straight haircuts that were angled and not exactly straight, Tim officially realized it was time to find a new hairdresser. Mom tried but physical issues prevented her from doing what she did so well for so long.
Of course that angled cut would be totally in style today! She was just ahead of her time! But it still didn’t stop Mom from being the critiquing our haircuts. She always had a knack for style.
Another thing my Mom loved to do was cook and bake. (A trait all the LaBranche girls had.) She got no greater pleasure than to see us enjoying a meal she made or a cake she baked. How many birthday cakes did she make over the years for her family and grandkids? How many people here either had a birthday cake made for them or ate Nanna’s Clam Chowder! Wow….
I know my sister Patti, my wife Kathy and many others learned many of their tricks in the kitchen from Mom over the years.
If anyone knew my Mom knew her greatest skill was that of a bargain hunter. I think she learned a trick or two from Aunt Teresa as they did the flea markets, tag sales and thrift stores. In her later years Tuesday was her day out with her Grandson Jonathon who faithful picked up Mom and Aunt Alma to go to the thrift stores. If any of you have stock in GoodWill or St Father DePaul’s here is an insider trading tip- stock is probably going to go down. All kidding aside the people who worked there knew them by name & looked forward each week to the Golden Girls to come in with their handsome escort! Nanna truly enjoyed that time. Thank you Jonathan for the time you took to help and spend time with your Grandmother. You could have spent your time elsewhere but you chose to be with Nanna. She always looked forward to your time together.

Mom often wondered in her later years why people were so kind to her. She was reaping what she sowed during her life. Her biggest disappointment came as she physically got weaker and was unable to help others and became dependent on us. Even up to the last week of her life she was planning what foods she could make for my upcoming birthday party. As much as I tried to tell her not to worry and just relax, she also knew we all loved her meatballs. Mom came to be very fond over the past 5 yrs & adopted Harry & Frank, our Chinese students we host as her “Chinese Grandsons.” Harry texted me from China very sad hearing of the passing of his “American Grandmother” and said “Nanna made the best meatballs in the world, I guess God needed someone to make the meatballs”
I also would like to Thank each of Nanna’s grandchildren, after Mom was hospitalized early this year, Chris, Shannon and Dan did overnights to stay with Nanna to make sure she wasn’t alone at night, Cara & Colleen spent time with her, made meals, And brought her little Great Grand Daughter Raelyn up to brighten her day. Tim and I appreciate all you did.
To my brother Tim, Thank you, for all you did for so many years to care for Mom. You always made sure every day to stop by to make sure Mom was OK and that she wasn’t eating too many donuts or Ice Cream. Well maybe not the donuts part but all you did to care for Mom I truly appreciate and am grateful and I know Mom was as well. To Patty for the many meals you sent up to Mom over the years...thank you
To my wife Kathleen, earlier this year it was apparent Mom needed to move in with us and you didn’t hesitate to open our home and serve your mother in law with cooking and helping anyway you could- You were and are such a blessing- in spite of your leg injury you still found ways to help. (oh, by the way, Sorry about the leg part)

I would like to close with a scripture passage I read at my Dad’s and my sisters service and is very meaningful during these times. The reading is from Revelation 21: 1-7
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
Rev 21:2
And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Rev 21:3
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place[fn] of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people,[fn] and God himself will be with them as their God.[fn]
Rev 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Rev 21:5

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Rev 21:6
And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.
Rev 21:7
The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be (her) God and (she) will be my (daughter.)

Mom while it’s time to take you to your place of rest we know that this is not the end, it is not goodbye, for it’s the beginning for you! Our faith also teaches us that we will see you again when God calls us home someday to be with him. Until that time Dearest Mother…..I will miss you but I know God is embracing you at this very moment and that gives me comfort, I love you.
