My Brother

My sincere condolences to Joe, Eric and Bob K. in this, their time of sorrow.

I first met Butch in 1956 when my Mom, (the widow Evelyn and Rees Senior a widower) married, and my older brother Dennis and I moved into Rees's crowded house on the hill at the top of Peach Farm Road (that was steep and winding). Butch and I walked up it many times in our years together. I was eleven in 1956 and Butch was thirteen. I followed behind him in Oxford Centralized School, and then onto Southbury High School. I was always the tag along younger brother that was allowed to hang out with Butch. He always treated me like a Brother and that opened many doors for me. I was accepted by Butch's friends and all the Miles relatives treated me like a full fledged Miles. Of Rees Senior's four step-siblings, I was the closest to Butch and always loved him for the boy, and later, the man he was.

Just last week, I mentioned to my wife that I wondered how Butch was doing. He has never been far from my thoughts. That was the day, he was leaving us all. He must have remembered me at the end, and let me know I was in his thoughts, too. Farewell Butch and know that you are loved and that you fought the good fight.

I have always thought of you as my Brother.
